About Eucali
I'm Morgan Sutherland, a.k.a. Eucali (pronounced "you-k'lee"), artist and remedial massage therapist. I live and practice in Brisbane/Meanjin, Queensland, Australia.
The Story Behind Eucali
Eucali is a name that blends inspiration from both nature and family. It stems from my love of eucalyptus, a calming, refreshing scent known for its rejuvenating and healing properties, which I incorporate into my room blends. Eucalyptus has always reminded me of home. The name Eucali was also influenced by the arrival of my youngest niece, Cali, in 2020, who brings joy and warmth wherever she goes. Eucali embodies the essence of who I am through my work: nurturing, creative, and thoughtful.
In my artistic process, I immerse myself in printmaking — particularly relief for its embossing and boldness, and drypoint for the experimentation with different plate surfaces. My inspiration is drawn from history and place, especially the unique landscapes and cultural diversity of Australia, as well as art and architecture, and a rich tapestry of family memories.
My artwork emerges from a quiet yet profound part of me, where hope and cynicism coexist. It delves into the human condition and the act of humans creating meaning. Rooted in my anxieties, I believe that sincerity and vulnerability are integral to crafting thought-provoking and honest art. I present myself in my creations, inviting the audience to recognise and laugh at aspects of themselves.
As a primarily printmaker and painter, I also explore ceramics. Through bold relief prints with experimental lighting effects, drypoint prints exploring diverse plate surfaces, and vibrant acrylic paintings, my art reflects the intricate dance between my inner world and the vast expanse of human experience.
Eucali art prints and greeting cards are printed with eco-friendly inks on 100% recycled papers and card. Fabric (including t-shirts, which are AS Colour) and enamel products are sourced and printed by OGO in Melbourne, Victoria, and are available through drop-shipping, reducing waste. It is important that everything is done as locally and without waste as possible.
